Siamese fighting fishAfter a whistleblower notified PETA that Absolut Vodka Taiwan used about 60 live fighting fish in bottles as part of a wall decoration during an event, PETA contacted the company in Taipei immediately and received confirmation that it will never use animals for any event again!

Approximately 90 percent of freshwater fish are raised on farms and usually bred in giant tubs in facilities that produce millions of fish per year. These animals are sold to zoos, pet stores, and bait shops, and many of them are doomed to live in plastic bags or cramped fish bowls for their entire lives. The bottles that the fish were displayed in could not have provided the adequate space or the healthy environment that they require. Fish are known to be intelligent and curious. They can recognize individuals, use tools, and maintain complex social relationships. Small bowls simply cannot meet their behavioral and physiological needs. The fish were also put through the unnecessary stress of being transported in and relocated to the bottles.

Siamese fighting fish are fighting for their lives, as their popularity grows and they are increasingly used as decorations or party favors. By refusing to use live animals in the future, Absolut Vodka Taiwan is setting an example for customers and refusing to support an industry that exploits fish—or any other animal—for entertainment.

Thank you, Absolut Vodka!
