Meet Saigon, Australia’s Last Living ‘Circus Elephant’

Elephants in zoos and circuses are denied everything that is natural and important to them.

Saigon is 55 years old. But instead of living out the rest of her days in glorious retirement, she is packed up like cargo and hauled around from town to town for 10 months every year. Devoid of any other elephant friends, Saigon’s existence with Perry Bros Circus and Zoo is a truly miserable one.

Elephants are social creatures who form lifelong bonds with their family and herd, but as a prisoner of this circus, Saigon has been denied the opportunity to mate or have children of her own. The last of her elephant friends died at Christmas in 2009, and although she is far too old to perform, Perry Bros refuses to give her up and reward her the freedom that she so richly deserves.

A number of complaints have been made to the RSPCA over the years, as people driving past Saigon in different locations have noticed that she lacks available water in scorching heat and engages in repetitive motions such as swaying from side to side and swinging her trunk back and forth. These actions are clear indications that Saigon is suffering from “zoochosis,” a mental condition that often occurs in captive animals as a result of being confined and denied freedom.

Our friends at Animals Australia are campaigning for Saigon’s rights. After all, even though she has committed no crime, she has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Support their campaign by signing the petition to free Saigon once and for all.

If a circus that uses and abuses animals is coming to your hometown, share this website with your friends and family who plan on attending.

Signed and sent to friends. I hope that she’s freed so she can spend what is left of her life with other elephants, free to roam and enjoy life. It must be hell for an elephant to be alone. They’re social animals.

It hurts me a lot every time i visit a zoo. (i don’t go there anymore) It’s truly a prison for animals, they don’t belong here. My friends always laugh at me every time i let them know my opinion about poor little guys or what we should do to help protect the environment (like stop eating meat,..) They even don’t support me but also shout loudly everywhere kinda “Oh Oanh loves the animals, Oanh loves the environment! She really loves it!” I know who is right here but it’s hard to find someone who have the same thoughts, they are all idiot kids!

I wish people/humans can look at it this way- imagine your 55 year old grandmother being dragged around the country to travel and hit with bull hooks and electric rods just to perform tricks! How would she feel?! Clearly she is being tortured. It’s very sad that humans only relate and care when pain is inflicting on their own kind. Open your eyes people. We are the most evolved among other beings in this world, lets start acting like one! Stop attending circuses! Speak up for animals!

Miss Saigon DESERVES to be let go to her natural habitat ,with her own kind-shes worked more harder than Perry Bros Circus and Zoo in a life time…what a disgrace you all are, thinking revenue and only of yourselves. LET HER GO TO LIVE FREELY AS SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO,STOP ABUSING MISS SAIGON.

It’s 2013 not 1950 , we know that Elephants are social creatures with highly developed social bonds . an elephant who had not seen another elephant for 20 years was successfully integrated into a herd in Tennessee . She remembered another elephant that she has met 30 years before . She has happily lived with elephant friends roaming the Tennessee hills and paddocks . Taking mud baths eating watermelon and trunk kissing with her elephant friends . It can be done she needs elephant friends she needs freedom t roam ,water to splash in . Imagine how lonely and sad this beautiful creature is the only life she has known is a prison . Surely she has earned the right to live with dignity and freedom . People become very emotional about elephants be ause the know how incredibly intelligent and highly social they are . I urge perry broa to look at the story of Shirly the elephant at the sanctuary in Tennessee . They might have made mistakes in the past by using her and training her for the pleasure of humans , but now they have NO ExCuse . They know what they are doing is in humane and cruel . She needs to be with other elephants not in solitary confinement. . Human beings appall me with their stupid arrogance and their belief that they have the right to control everything Round them . Pleas show some empathy ,please realise that you have an opportunity to make amends for your past mistake . Every one I know is boycotting your circus until you stop this cruelty . I know you love and care for her with food , but she needs more than that to have a fulfilled life . Find a way to ensure that her real needs are met . The best circuses are ones that don’t use animals . The only circuses making a profit are ones that don’t use animals . I want to see your business grow and prosper . If you want this to happen listen to what the community is saying . We don’t like seeing the sad lives of circus animals . It make us feel disgusted in ur species . Look up the sanctuary in Tennessee and you might get some ideas of how this amazing creature can still find joy and happiness in her last years. She has given so much to umans over her 50 years it’s time we all repaid her .
