As If It Couldn’t Get Any Worse …

Dog at Tony's ShelterTony’s Shelter in Pattaya, Thailand, has been under fire from PETA and compassionate people all around the world for keeping animals in filthy conditions and not providing them with veterinary care. Unfortunately, even with routine inspections by PETA over the past several years and continued efforts on our part to work with the animal shelter’s owner, a wealthy local business man, conditions at the shelter have actually worsened.

A PETA inspection yesterday revealed that dogs with obvious injuries and fresh surgical wounds were crammed into mud-filled cages with other dogs and piles of excrement and rotten food. A sickly looking newborn puppy lay on the floor of a filthy pen crowded with adult dogs and was not moved until PETA’s inspector demanded that the puppy and her mother be transferred immediately.

Please, keep the pressure on Tony’s to improve conditions immediately or close the shelter altogether. Dogs deserve better.

I think what is going on in Tony’s Shelter in Pattaya, Thailand, is disgusting! We as humans are supposed to be protectors of animals, so for them to treat them like that is appalling! If you can’t treat animals with respect how are you supposed to care for your own family? I am so sick to my stomach, something needs to be done. We need stricter laws for this type of mis treatment. And people wonder why I hate man so badly. Here’s an example.

People with good intentions for animals should really carry out their animal welfare efforts more responsibly. Saving and caring for strays is very rewarding but at the same time it requires a lot of love, attention and care. It’s no easy task. If shelters do not have enough resources to provide decent home for these animals, they should find other ways to fend for the strays.

It doesn’t matter if you are a part of an Occupy movement, PETA, Republican, Democrat, Independent Religious or not. If you are a part of the human race, this should be a wake up call that something is very wrong with our society.

I hate this! Feels so helpless from inside looking at these kind of pictures.. It brings tears when I look at those eyes seeking for some kindness from human beings. What’s wrong with them to treat these beautiful lovable animals like this…crazy!

This is a sad situation and it’s hard to work out a balance. I understand why the shelter is refusing to kill its animals are PETA has suggested, but if the owner is really that rich, why on earth does he reply to emails saying that they survive only on donations and are doing the best they can with the very little money they have. I am finding it hard to see through the fog, but one thing is for sure, these poor animals need money spent on a decent shelter, care and adoption campagns.

This is hardly a shelter if animals r still suffering from hunger or hurt. Why gather these little angels when U can’t do better? I couldn’t read no more because the picture tells it all. Come on, Tony, what’s stopping you from doing better???

I am anonymous because I live in Pattaya and would be at risk if I was identified.

“Tony” is a half Thai /American who owns large entertainment complexes and is high up in one of the main local Mafia clans. They are ruthless and wouldn’t hesitate to kill anyone who spoke up publicly. We know for certain that dogs were killed and sold en mass to the local crocodile farm.

There is only one thing that will work and that is contant pressure to embarrass the city council.

The Mayor, Khun (which is ‘Mr’ in Thai) Ittipol speak English well he is on face book as Itthiphol Kunplome people should join his page and comment directly. Please don’t be rude be polite but firm. Buddhism doesn’t allow this abuse.

Money obviously isn’t the answer, as it says ‘wealthy’. I agree with Esmee Joseph people with good intentions should carry out their animal welfare efforts responsibly It does take effort, as well as finance, to care for strays. You cannot just put them in a cage and hope for the best. Maybe he could get volunteers to help him? People trained in animal welfare.

As advised this “shelter” is run by a wealthy Thai businessman with local connections to Pattaya authorities who in effect use it as a dumping ground for stray dogs in Pattaya. The German lady who first exposed what was going on has actually had death threats. It is rumored though not yet proven that dogs from this “shelter” are being supplied to the dog meat traders who smuggle dogs to Vietnam in horrendous conditions further north.

I visited Tony’s place about 4 years ago and it was sad to see all those dogs in cages and pens but they looked ok. I don’t understand how he could let the conditions go down hill like they have. I think you have to find out why this is happening. Maybe he has run out of money. It costs a lot to run a shelter. I have one in Chiang Mai called the ARK (Animal Rescue Kingdom) where we have 80 dogs that live on beautiful 9 rai with a lake. What Thailand needs is more shelters like mine with the support of Thai people not only foreigners.

It seems that the only shelter these dogs are getting is shelter from compassionate carers and from the medical treatment they obviously need. What it stopping you PETA and other international and Thai organisations from shutting down his hell hole. I run a small dog rescue centre in the South of Thailand and my objectives are to get the dogs healthy, neutered and adopted which seems very far from Mr Tony’s objectives.

humans, need them and have a brain like a 3-4 years old child…. what a shame for this City – who wants to be a tourism center – the world must know about this cruelty….
I have seen in the shelter dogs eating dogs…dead dogs lying around eaten by maggots, dead puppies bloddy – thin dogs beaten by the bigger – the sick get no food, because the bigger ones takes it all….. no protecion from sun, no watersupply – this must go public – because who really wants to make hollidays in a place where the step to hell starts? They are than curel transportet to food industrie – live cooked – fur industrie – live skinned after suffering and surviving this hell. The Area is so big that the one-time Visitor not see outside cages…. the most cruel…. the food is not enough, open wounds are infected, many have rabies, some have legs broken, in some cages they are sorted by color……. some are only skelets with fur – so thin, they have no chance to get food, because of the bigger ones in the same cages….

The other day all are gone…. then collection in Pattaya streets starts again. What a cruelty – a dog is the humans most loved companion. The dogs trusted humans, need them and have a brain like a 3-4 years old child…. what a shame for this City – who wants to be a tourism center – the world must know about this cruelty….

The one step visitor does not see the outer cages…. some sorted by color of fur. Others by bread – other not at all. Dogs are thin like a skellet – no chance to get food, because they are beaten by the bigger ones… they die of starvation. Open wounds, dead dogs remaining inside the cages….

Than, an other day, the cages are empty – where are they gone??? In the dry season bones of dogs are lying around, heads of dogs…. you cannot imaginge…. people tell, they are transported to fur and Food – Industrie – which is illegal in Thailand – what a shame, what a cruelty to this animals…..

just wanted to add: the Dogs are suffering of Scabis or Mange not Rabies, it is a typing mistake – anyway, what I saw in the comments: the Crocodile farm is well known, and even there is another in Na Jomiten!

I do not think, that the dogs are killed before – they are thrown into the Crocs Pools alive! Thats cheaper.

Why can notbody ends this story about this slaughter shelter???? Please EVERYBODY write Letters to tony and the government indidviual…. this is a story which will not be attracktive to visitors from other countries – tell it to the world!

I see lots of accusations and no proof at all of any wrongdoing. Can someone please show some evidence of deliberate wrongdoing and torture?
I have called the shelter and they said that Tony is open to any discussion or advise, so I guess PETA has already done that? No they never contacted Tony. Is Peta willing to fund any changes if found necessary? They are very rich so they could do so. Please advise…

Edwin, we have called Tony and written him many letters, however he has been unresponsive and totally unwilling to work with us. We have sent medication to the shelter for mange, to at least take away some of the suffering these dogs endure, however it was never used. Peta kills thousands of animals every year. How is that different??

  35. admin...
    December 14th, 2011, 11:32 am

PETA continuously works to campaign for what we believe are the most effective solutions to the end of animal suffering -spaying and neutering, and adoption. Until we are successful in our efforts, we will continue to be left with thousands of animals who have no place to go, and no relief from their agonizing pain. Under these tragic circumstances, we are faced with an urgent responsibility to provide them with what we believe is the most humane option to end their suffering, euthanasia. For more information on the inspiration behind PETA’s euthanasia policy, please follow this link: http://www.peta.org/b/thepetafiles/archive/2009/03/30/why-we-euthanize.aspx
