Ten years before garnering international accolades for his performance in The Artist, canine film star Uggie was a rambunctious puppy who was passed off by three different guardians who were unprepared for the Jack Russell terrier’s energy. But dog trainer Omar Von Muller stepped in to prevent Uggie from ending up in an animal shelter and soon fell in love with his fearless, playful attitude—and his star quality. And now, the award-winning pooch is starring in a brand-new PETA ad to help fight homeless animal crisis.

Uggie PETA ad

Uggie joins a long list of celebrities—including Justin Bieber, Booboo Stewart, and Kellan Lutz—who have promoted animal adoption. Do Uggie a favor and help save his canine friends by pledging to adopt and not buy.

MMA Fighter Richard Quan Talks Ink, Not Mink!

Richard Quan

Richard Quan is no stranger to cages. With a pro record of seven fights for seven wins, this South African mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete knows what he’s getting himself into when he steps into the cage. But he’s quick to point out that the only skin he’s comfortable in is his own, not that of animals caged, beaten, and slaughtered for their fur.

In his new PETA ad, Richard tells us to “be comfortable in your own skin, and let animals keep theirs.” MMA athletes such as Richard choose to step into the cage for a fair fight—but there’s no such thing as a fair fight for the millions of animals confined to cages on fur farms, facing slaughter through beating, electrocution, or even being skinned alive.

Animals used for fur often come from China, where there are no penalties for people who abuse animals on fur farms. Foxes, minks, rabbits, and other animals live in wire cages exposed to the elements and often suffer from illnesses, diseases, and anxiety-induced psychosis. Because the origins of fur are impossible to trace, if the skin you’re wearing isn’t your own, you have no way of knowing where it came from or whose it was.

Richard Quan chooses ink, not mink. And once you find out more about the issue, we’re sure that you’ll be in his corner and pledge never to wear fur.

South African Mixed Martial Artist Norman ‘Chef’ Wessels Fights for Animals

Norman Wessels

As you would expect from the former heavyweight champion of South Africa’s biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) competition, the Extreme Fighting Championship, Norman “Chef” Wessels pushes himself hard to give his very best in the ring or cage. And in a new ad for PETA, he explains why he wants people to boycott the circus, saying, “I choose to be in the ring. Animals don’t.”

Animals used in circus acts are not only pushed hard but also trained through fear and punishment to perform difficult and unnatural tricks night after night. An undercover investigation into Brian Boswell’s Circus found elephants chained by their back legs in the searing heat for up to 19 hours a day and training that included the use of bullhooks—an instrument resembling a fireplace poker—on elephants’ soft-tissue areas.

Lions, elephants, and other animals used in circuses for our “entertainment” live miserable lives and are denied the opportunity to engage in their most basic natural behaviors, including have important family relationships and roaming hundreds of kilometers as they would in their natural environment. “Chef” says, “Leave wild animals where they belong—in the wild.” And that’s a message that we should all take to heart—even if it weren’t coming from a 100-kilogram wrecking machine like Norman Wessels! So the next time you want to see heavyweights give it their all in the ring, skip the circus and watch some MMA instead!

Maggie Q

The nominees haven’t been posted long, but Hong Kong singer-songwriter Khalil Fong and queen of pop Faye Wong have taken the lead over other Asian contenders in PETA Asia’s annual Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity contest. Singer-songwriter Sia Furler is ahead of the others for the Australian contest. Other celebrities leading the pack include model-turned–Hollywood hottie Maggie Q; Indian film heavyweights and 3 Idiots stars Kareena Kapoor and R. Madhavan; pop singer Louis Cheung and his wife, Kay Tse; musicians Ash Grunwald, Missy Higgins and John Butler; actors Isabel Lucas, Gao Yuanyuan, and Abbie Cornish; and comedian Chris Lilley and surfer Dave Rastovich.

Why are more and more trendsetters choosing to go vegetarian? Healthy vegetarian diets can help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and strokes. Plus, meat-eaters are nine times more likely to be obese than vegans are, making a vegetarian diet the easiest way to stay slim and sexy.

So what are you waiting for? Check out the list of nominees and help PETA pick the winner today!

The Joys of Adopting an Older Animal

  • Facebook

Jock on backA year and a half ago, my family and I adopted Jock, an older beagle, from a local animal shelter. Until then, we were mostly a cat family, but when a friend who volunteered at the shelter told us Jock’s story, we decided to pay him a visit. He had been living at the shelter for a while and didn’t seem to attract any adopters, probably because of his age. Poor Jock was already around 10 years old when we went to see him. He was the least noisy dog in the shelter and just gently wagged his tail when we stopped in front of his cage. Our only requirement for bringing a dog into our home was that he or she must get along with our cat, and Jock has proved to be a friend to cats.

Usually, people prefer to adopt younger animals because they think they are cuter and more fun and that they can be educated more easily. I can swear that this isn’t true. Jock is turning 12 this year, and he still has loads of energy and learns new things everyday! He’s a real sweetie, good-natured, and patient, and he always goes to you when he senses that you’re feeling blue. He was a bit shy at the beginning and used to crawl around on the floor when he was naughty. But with time, patience, and love, he lost his worried look and is much more at ease at home now (sometimes a bit too much!).

Jock in grass

Last autumn, a young stray cat was wandering around outside our house. Jock took his kibble in his mouth and put it on the ground in front of the cat—he clearly wanted to give her some food. A few minutes later, they were eating from the same bowl at the same time. The day after, we found them sleeping together in Jock’s basket. We gave Jock a home, and he decided to make room for the stray cat, whom we named Ginger. Jock has even learned to play with Ginger! He holds one side of a string in between his teeth and waves it above Ginger. Who said older animals were no fun? Ginger thinks he’s a great friend, and so do we.

Jock and a cat

Older animals are often left aside because people are prejudiced against them. They are the unlucky ones who are usually put to sleep first. They have sometimes been abandoned several times. Don’t let them end their lives in a shelter. Give them a chance. You could be surprised to discover how much personality and charm an older animal can have.

Reasons Why I’m Vegan

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Digg
  • Friendster

When people learn that I’m vegan, the first thing they say after ”What?!” is “Why?!” Here’s the top ten reasons why I don’t eat meat, eggs, or dairy products:

1. Just as dogs and cats are your friends, all animals are my friends. And friends don’t eat friends.

2. There’s already enough suffering in this world. Cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals feel pain just as people do, but they’re at our mercy because they cannot fend for themselves. I don’t want to add to animal suffering or be a part of it.

3. I wouldn’t want to work at a factory farm or a slaughterhouse. Would you want to burn a cow’s horns off, sear a chicken’s beak off with a hot blade, or castrate a pig—all without painkillers—or watch while they writhe in pain when they’re scalded alive or their throats are slit? If you wouldn’t want to inflict or witness such cruelty, why would you expect someone else to?

4. People who eat animal flesh or byproducts are more likely to suffer from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. We’re healthier if we don’t hurt animals.

5. A meat-eater’s diet is responsible for more than seven times as much greenhouse-gas emissions as a vegan’s diet is. We’re all responsible for the future of our world.

6.  Meat consumption is an inefficient use of grain and soy. More than half of the world’s crops are used to feed farmed animals, not people.  Why funnel perfectly edible food through farmed animals when there are hungry, malnourished people in the world?

7. Animals don’t want to be killed and consumed by you. They’re terrified by the sights and smells of the slaughterhouse and fight to stay alive. I wouldn’t want anyone to kill and eat me, so, I wouldn’t do it to animals. It’s the Golden Rule!

8. It takes approximately 10 times more fossil fuels—and considerably more water—to produce meat than to produce vegan foods.

9. Cows produce milk for the same reason humans do: to feed their babies. But on factory farms, cows are artificially impregnated every year so that they’ll provide a steady supply of milk. Their babies are taken away from them within a day or two of birth so that humans can have the milk nature intended for calves.

10. Vegan foods are not only cholesterol-free, typically low in saturated fat, and high in fiber and other essential nutrients, they taste great. With all the tasty mock meats, dairy-free milks, and other wholesome vegan foods available, I get to enjoy a variety of delicious vegan foods.

I wish I had realized all of this when I was younger. I would have made the compassionate decision to go vegan much earlier than I did. But it’s never too late to do the right thing. Join me in making this world a better place by pledging to go vegan for 30 days!

Cara G says, ‘Save the Planet—Go Vegetarian’

Earth Ad

Supermodel Cara G stars in a new advertisement for PETA urging viewers to “go vegetarian” and “save the planet.” The ad is being released for Earth Day in order to drive home the environmental impact of a vegetarian diet.

Cara is a true friend to animals and to PETA, having previously appeared in a PETA anti-fur ad and recently retweeting our Chinese fur farm investigation messages on Weibo. As a vegetarian, Cara knows how meatless dining is kinder to animals, our health, and the Earth.

The leading cause of climate change might be on your dinner plate. A recent United Nations report concluded that a global shift toward a vegan diet is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change.

In Central America, two-thirds of the rain forests have been cleared to make way for cattle ranches while, at the same time, the world’s livestock account for 15 to 25 percent of overall global methane emissions—and methane is 24 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide is.

Many leading environmental organizations—including the National Audubon Society, the Worldwatch Institute, the Sierra Club, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and even Al Gore’s Live Earth—have recognized that raising animals for food damages the environment more than just about anything else that we do. Whether it’s the overuse of resources, climate change, massive water and air pollution, or soil erosion, raising animals for food is wreaking havoc on the Earth.

The most effective step you can take to save the planet is to join Cara G in going vegetarian—take the Pledge to Go Vegan now!

Tianjin to Build China’s Largest Horse Prison

  • Facebook

  • Friendster

“It’s hard to justify how many horses we go through. In humans you never see someone snap their leg off running in the Olympics. But you see it in horse racing.”

—Dr. Rick Arthur, equine medical director for the California Racing Board

China is currently building its largest international horse-racing complex in Tianjin. The cost is estimated to be at ¥26 billion. ¥26 billion—that’s about ¥2,100 for every person in Tianjin. The complex will be the country’s largest horse prison, where horses will be bred, forced to train and race, and many will be ultimately sentenced to death.

Horses are trained for races in ways that would never be acceptable for training human athletes. Jockeys use whips to make them do what they want and feed them drugs such as steroids in order to enhance their performance. As long as people feel the need to force horses to run at high speeds under stressful conditions for “entertainment,” there will be deaths at racetracks. Many of those who do not die at the racetracks will end their careers in slaughterhouses.

Many of us have read Anna Sewell’s famous novel Black Beauty—for those who haven’t, it’s about a horse who was born free but was later enslaved and forced to pull carriages. The story’s valuable lessons of hardship, cruelty, sympathy, and kindness that Sewell wrote about in 1877 still apply today: “[Animals] cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words.

How You Can Help

●    Encourage everyone you know to boycott the horse-racing industry. Ask them not to bet on horse races or attend the races.

●    Write a blog post or share information on your social-networking pages about the unethical racing industry.

●      Please join our Activist Network to get involved.
